After having made drawings of a particularly magnificent oak tree in Wivenhoe Park I have been thinking about the big trees on the left of Constable’s Leaping Horse. The way they are stacked against the left side of the canvas and the way the space opens up to the right. A very similar thing happens in The Hay Wain. With my reduced palette of dark green, red, white and deep blue I have been improvising this left/right split. By early this afternoon it seemed to be heading somewhere interesting and, as it was very hot in the studio, I headed off to the allotment.
