Still thinking about that painting; the presence of the horizon seems to make it resolve too quickly into a picture. I want it to remain as painting. No matter what happens in the lower ¾, as soon as a colour is blocked in across the top it reads as a landscape. This has to be dealt with as living on the flat east coast the horizon is often a straight division between above and below. Yesterday I worked on these pieces on paper, each 60x84cm, looking at that lower ¾ of the painting and I feel there is something good happening. So back to the canvas next week.
