Still working on this painting (162 x 200cm) - not particularly seeking to resolve it but rather just using it as a place to set things down and to see what happens. I like the interaction between the central vertical divide and the apparent flatness of the land, the painting opened up by a central gutter like a book; but the two halves seem to have drifted apart some what. A certain amount of drift has entered into the whole process, which might or might not be a good thing, also a certain listlessness but that could be to do with the endless summer heat (finally interrupted last night by spectacular a thunderstorm and overnight rain). I have been working on a parallel painting on paper (100 x 120cm) and this week started some smaller pieces on paper trying to re-see the subject matter. Sometimes (usually for me) you look so long and so intensely that the subject seems to become over familiar and tired; it is then very exciting when you can re-imagine or re-vitalise the subject and see things as if new, full of wonder and marvellous again.
